What is NAMI?

NAMI is the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the nation's largest grassroots organization for people with mental illness and their families. Founded in 1979, NAMI has affiliates in every state and in more than 1,100 local communities across the country.

Our Mission

NAMI Central Georgia is dedicated to the eradication of mental illnesses and to the improvement of the quality of life of all whose lives are affected by these diseases.

Support
Support groups are available for family members and for individuals with an illness. Support helps people realize they are not alone-that there are families in their own communities who understand and want to help them meet the challenges they face.

Education
Free education classes are available so that people can learn about the disease affecting them or a family memmber and about the resources available for treatment, housing, and financial aid. Education and outreach help to inform the general public about severe and persistent brain disorders to help reduce the stigma associated with mental illness and to build understanding.

Advocacy
As people experience firsthand the difficulties of living with serious and persistent brain disorders, they need opportunities to advocate for change such as improved services, great access to treatment, housing, employment, insurance parity, etc. As an advocacy organization, NAMI tracks and keeps members informed about important political and social issues affecting people with mental illnesses and their families.
